Nick Young Chat log:

Transcript of the live irc chat session with Nicholas Young.

Session Start: Fri Oct 26 18:50:58 2001

*** Now talking in #TomorrowPeople

Dreadnought: hello everyone. Hello Nick - thanks very much for giving us your time. Have you ever done any chatting of this sort before? Online, I mean?

Pikachutru: I like to ask Nicholas if he's surprised at the continued interest in the Original Series.

Nick_Young: Yes, I'm very suprised!

Drednort: Well, I really don't have a question. But an observation, if I may. Nick, when I was growing up I had a great deal of trouble because I was different from other kids. The Tomorrow People on TV was one of the few good things in my life for a long time - and John became my role model. I just want to thank you for your portrayal of that character and to let you know that, strange as it may seem, you made a big difference in my life.

Nick_Young: Thank you for your comments, it's good to know that my efforts are appreciated!

angeriana: Alana you're next

Alana: First, thank you for giving us this opportunity. One of the things that most appealed to me about the TP was there non-violent solution to what seemed impossible problems. My question: How do you feel about all the killing in the new CD? --Ana (from Mexico)

Nick_Young: I was not sure about turning PVC into a killer, I don't think it was quite right really.

angeriana is glad Nick said that!

Alana: Many of us were quite upset about the disregarding of the Prime Barrier

*** Deron has joined #TomorrowPeople

* angeriana welcome Deron please wait to be asked for your question...

Nick_Young: I can't argue with that. However there may have been sound (pardon the pun) reasons - the unavailability of the cast members who were bumped off!

Alana: Yes, but it didn't have to be a TP who killed them!

Nick_Young: Don't blame the actor, blame the writer

* angeriana is also glad Nick said that!

Alana: I don't blame it on the actors. In any case, I am glad you agree with us. And thanks.

* angeriana Daltonames you're up next... your question please ok we'll give daltonames another minute then move on to Deron.

Deron: Hi, Nick. I'm actually here because my girl Jackie is at work but wanted me to pop in here to say hi from her... and from me too! She has loved the TP since she was a little kid, and now we both totally dig it as adults (sort of)... ... meaning we're sort of adults! But I will say thank you to you and all the tp-type folks for hours of amusement... could you be so kind, Nick, as to give a shout-out to my girl Jackie in a "john-like" way?

Nick_Young: Deron, thanks for your comments, I'm glad you both enjoyed the programme (and the cd's?)

Deron: the cd's were brilliant!

angeriana: ok next question please.

Deron: hey now... I was not finished!

angeriana: ok Deron continue please

*** Jillybee has joined #tomorrowpeople

* angeriana welcome Jillybee please wait to be asked for your question.

Deron: can you give a shout out to my girlfriend Jackie?... I'm going to print this out and she'd be tickled if you say something to her... :)

Nick_Young: Hi, Jackie. I hear that you've been a fan since you were a little kid. I won't ask how long ago that was!

angeriana: Midigirl next quickly before she has to leave.

Deron: he he... you rock, Nick... thanks and next time we're in the uk, we'll take you out for a few pints!

Nick_Young: That's orange juice of course. TP's don't drink (or have any other vices)

Midogirl: I just wanted to know what you thought of the Tp reincarnation (with Kristian Scmit) when you first saw it.

Deron: well said!

Nick_Young: I thought it was a shame they didn't tie up the two programmes with some reference to the old. It was better filmed but after all, which version is still out there on CD?

Midigirl: exactly! hehe thanks for answering my question. if I had Tp powers I'd teleport my younger brother away so he won't badger me to come on here anymore! :D :D thanks a lot, bye everyone:)

Nick_Young: You would probably need a matter transporter for best results.

Midigirl: it wouldn't matter as long as he was outta my hair lol bye

*** midigirl has quit IRC (Quit: )

angeriana: Pikachutru your turn next

Pikachutru: Um...

Nick_Young: Er.... I hear we met in London (and shook hands) have you washed them since!?

Pikachutru: I had the pleasure of meeting Nicholas at Dreamwatch 1994, I found him to be just as... *searching for the right word*... perfect as I imagined he'd be.

Nick_young: That's the right word.

*** jansulli has joined #TomorrowPeople

* angeriana welcome Jansuli please wait to be asked for your question.

angeriana: jillybee your turn ok...

Jillybee: .first, thanks so much for being here! My question has to do with the new CD's, which are wonderful... will some of the loose ends in Deadliest species be explained.. Don't want to say more ...afraid of spoiler issues...

Nick_Young: Difficult to answer without knowing which loose ends you are referring to...

Jillybee: I realized when I started writing... how about the indirect references to the new series...

Nick_Young: I don't know whether there is an overall plan with regard to new TP who may have been mentioned. The stories are written by different people so certain "loose ends" may remain

* angeriana may ask a question... do you think that Big finish is happy with the success of the new cd's?

Nick_Young: They seem to be.

*** Latimer84 has joined #tomorrowpeople

* angeriana are they likely to make more than the 4 they originally planned?

Drednort: OK - with regards to the series. Did you have a favourite - or least favourite - serial among the stories?

*** jansulli has joined #TomorrowPeople.

Nick_Young: Least favourite was the story that Roger Price didn't write. We were stuck on the edge of a black hole for four eps. and it got VERY boring! Favourites were Living Skins, Blue and Green and Hearts of Sogguth.

Jansulli: Hi, Did you regret the way that the series was finished on the TV?

Nick_young: Yes, it finished in a hurry with a poorly written story and rather bad bad guys who I have likened to demented Daleks on Viagara

* angeriana do u have anything to add jansulli?

Jansulli: Would you have come back in a TV series instead of the CD's?

Nick_Young: After some plastic surgery-yes.

Jansulli: It can't be that bad.

Nick_Young: Well, maybe just some Lady Grecian 2000

* angeriana from where I'm sitting Nick looks just fine... ok Latimer84 your turn .

Latimer84: Was there anything you would have liked made into a story, such as an idea you may have had, either during the filming or now? Okay, my grammar died, but you get the idea ^_^;

Nick_Young: I did write a story or two, but Roger Price guarded his position jealously!

angeriana: anything else Latimer84?

Latimer84: What happened in them?

Nick_Young:I think one of them involved time travel back to the American Civil War. I had Elizabeth captured by some rebels and we had to rescue her...I can't remember the rest, maybe the South won....!

* angeriana back to Drednort do u have another question?

Deron: I have a question now... I guess I have to wait...

angeriana: Nope you can ask as it's your first one.

Deron: cheers... but it's silly... we have come to the conclusion that all tp's must have incredibly shiny hair... what are your thoughts on this matter?

Nick_Young: John just jaunted to the John (as they say in the colonies) :).

Deron:lol!

Midigirl: hehe

* angeriana has lost all track of who's next...

Deron: did you see my question, Nick? it's very important I shall type it again, yes?

Nick_Young: About the hair? Yes- I was saying that everyone had shiny hair in the 70's (I still have)

Deron: lol yes that was it... you always had the shiniest of them all, man.

Nick_Young: I learnt from Roger Moore - wash your hair in beer!

Jillybee: Mental note...;)

Deron: why did we ever fight the British rule over here?

midigirl: wouldn't that attract the bees?

Drednort: TP's and alcohol - external use only hehe lol

Nick_Young: It's not too late for the U.S. to apply for membership of the Commonwealth or to restore the Queen (or join Canada!)

* angeriana very true... is it also true that you don't drink in real life?

Pikachutru: Of course, you could always use the alcohol to get a TP drunk, then you could... um, never mind.

midigirl: some people only think of one thing.....

Nick_Young: I always suspected that TIM had more than oil or water in those tubes...

midigirl: lol

Deron: hee hee.

angeriana: ok any serious questions?

Pikachutru: I'd like to ask Nicholas his opinion of why it seems like most science fiction portrays psionics as dangerous and unstable (i.e.: "Carrie)?

Nick_Young: Because such powers can so easily be used for evil purposes. They are safe in TP hands because of our commitment to non-violence (except PVC on a bad hair day)

* angeriana but we all know what Peter does with the beer!

TinyTim: lol.

Alana84: I'd like to ask Nick some more: What are the things you liked the most about the TP, and playing the TP? And, if there is something, what did you dislike about doing the show?

Nick_Young: I enjoyed working on the show because we always had a laugh making it. Peter and I were always seeing the funny side of things. The show itself was a breath of fresh air in children's TV at the time and it was exciting working on something that was new and different. I disliked the lack of money to do things properly. I would have loved to have seen it shot on film instead of video. The special effects were much weaker than they...

Alana84: Thank you. It was certainly a breath of fresh air and still is...

Deron: sorry for speaking out of turn, but my student is here... even though I'd much rather hang out and tp... I must away... thank you, Nick, for your time and humour...

Jillybee: any good behind the scene stories you could share??

Nick_Young: Peter was always late for rehearsal. One day he blamed the fact that he'd had an accident on his motorbike. Honest John did not believe him, and ripped off the bloodstained bandage (Heinz Ketchup c. 1974) thus exposing his lies!

angeriana: who's next?

Latimer84: I've got one from a friend.

Drednort: OK - here's a somewhat different question - I had the misfortune to view Eskimo Nell - and it is a tribute to my esteem for your acting that I would sit through any film you appeared in no matter how bad. But it lead me to wonder if that film had any impact on 'A Man for Emily' - almost certainly not, but the cowboy suits were interesting. (-8 heh... :)

Nick_Young: I think the writer of Eskimo Nell was living out one of his fantasies. Once again, don't blame the actor....(and don't tell anyone where they can get hold of a copy).

Drednort: I will burn my copy directly (-8

Nick_Young: Phew....thanks rofl...

angeriana: Nick just offered to show me his copy.

Nick_Young: That's...COPY!

angeriana: Pikachitru next then Latimer.

Pikachutru: lol If people did start breaking out, which do you think would happen first: They'd be killed by fearful mobs of norms, or they'd be rounded up by the Government and held in those compounds with the alien bodies that the Government swears don't exist?

*** RedKF has joined #tomorrowpeople

* angeriana welcome RedKF please wait to be asked for your question.

Nick_Young: Interesting question which was explored in some episodes. I imagine any government would seek to use their powers. Imagine if they let us loose in Afghanistan - we'd soon find him.

TinyTim: I've gotta bow out now ppls.. Thanks to Jackie and Nick.. it was nice chatting to you :)

Latimer84: Do you still play the electric guitar? Do you write music? Have you ever been in a band (even if it's just you and your friends over at your place for a late-night jam session)? What groups/music inspired you to learn the guitar in the first place, and whom do you listen to now? -- From Holly (TPDIS)

*** r_i_c_h_a_r_d has joined #TomorrowPeople

* angeriana welcome Richard... please wait to be asked for your question ***

TheLightFantastic has joined #TomorrowPeople.

* angeriana welcome TheLightFantastic please wait to be asked for your question

Nick_Young: Yes, I have never stopped playing the guitar. My writing is not that good- I prefer to perfect other people's stuff. I was in a band (group-as they were called in the 60's) called The Orange Illusion

midigirl: cool name.

Drednort: Hang on - was that the same band that Darryl Read was in?

Nick_Young: Yes, how very perceptive....

Drednort - My girlfriend has an obsession with him (-8

Jillybee: did TIM write your songs?;)

Nick_Young: I was inspired by the Rolling Stones/Kinks/The Who and can play all the best bits from their early stuff - and I still listen to their stuff!

Nick_Young: Tim's song writing abilities are somewhat limited (have you heard Flintlock?)

midigirl: Meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeow that was to the flintlock thing by the way

* angeriana I have another question from a tpdis member sent via mail...

angeriana: Besides having hundreds of beautiful actresses (and one beautiful TP fan/web mistress!) parading through your office every day, what do you find rewarding about being a theatrical agent? How does your television/film experience help your clients?

Nick_Young: Apart from the beautiful actresses? Nothing! My experience as an actor has helped me to understand the neuroses and anxieties that many actors suffer from.

angeriana: Thanks Nick now it's RedKF turn then Richards.

RedKF: I for one spent far too much time in the 80's when I saw the show wondering where all of you were and what you were doing... When I could manage to separate the characters from the actors... I even spent (and spend) time praying for all of you. I can't imagine what that must be like for you (knowing there are nuts like me out there) :) ... How do you handle such things?

Nick_Young: With nutcrackers

*** has joined #tomorrowpeople

* angeriana welcome shennagh please wait to be asked for your question

midigirl:lol

Alana84: lol

RedKF: hehehe

TinyTim:hehe

shennagh: Am I late? Have I missed anything?

Nick_Young: No

shennagh: Good.

TinyTim: Hey shennagh :)

midigirl: well you missed the cakes.

angeriana: Richard your turn to ask a question. Jillybee is next in line after Richard

Richard: hi Jackie and Nick.... I don't actually have a question (for once) only to say it's always good to chat and I'm so pleased to at last see the TP profile rise.

RedKF: Hear! Hear!

angeriana: ok Jillybee then shennagh who hasn't asked one yet.

Jillybee: did you ever want to do more stories that dealt with more personal aspects of the tp's lives (family, non TP friends)?

midigirl: yeah TP is soooo underrated.

Nick_Young: Wait for the next CD. In that story we hear about John's girlfriend who declined becoming a full TP because being close to John was "too dangerous" (I think she means emotionally!) Short and sweet.

midigirl: sounds good.

Jillybee: groovy... :) I look forward to that!

Alana84: Oh no! There goes my fanfic...

* angeriana two more questions sent via mail... both about the new cd's firstly Beth asks for Nick's thoughts on the breaking of the prime barrier and Viv asks whether it is fun recording cd's... rather than TV.

Nick_Young: As already said, I was not happy that PVC turned into a killer. Perhaps we could "do a Dallas" and find it was all a (bad) dream....

angeriana: Shennagh is definitely the next person to ask a question.

Alana84: Yes!

Shennagh: I can't think of anything to ask at the moment - it's just great to be in the company of so many like-minded people... Oh, I did want to say that Nick, you were one of my heartthrobs when I was a kid - and, judging from your recent TV appearance, you've still got IT.

Jillybee: I've got a train to catch... Nick, thanks so much for being here!

midigirl: Mike Holloway's a bit of a looker too!

Nick_Young: I have enjoyed doing the CDs. As a listener, you can imagine I look just as handsome as I was all those years ago !

*** Cry10 has joined #tomorrowpeople I can imagine

* angeriana welcome Cry10 please wait to be asked for your question

Nick_Young: Mike who?

RedKF: Imagine!... I spend the whole time listening with the CD case in my hand... just staring.

Pikachutru: lol I can, too... um, actually let's not bring up my imagination. That's a scary place.

Nick_Young: Shennagh, what a shame you grew older (and wiser)

Shennagh: Not that old, and no wiser!

* angeriana would people who still have questions to ask please message me in private ... snicker your turn next.

Alana84: Do remember that after all these, almost 30(!) years of fandom, we all grew older and wiser same as you

* angeriana TheLightFantastic is next up

TheLightFantastic: Hmm...well, for one, it's so lovely to have you here! :)

Nick_Young: Nice being had.

TheLightFantastic: When it's all said and done, what one thing would you like for people to be able to say about your career and your life?

Nick_Young: He was never paid enough, and here's a cheque for the balance...

TheLightFantastic: LOL!

shennagh: lol I can relate to that!

Pikachutru: I hear you, brother.

Nick_Young: But more seriously, I am happy if people have enjoyed what I did over the years. I would hope that people would think I did my best to be thoughtful and helpful throughout my life.

* angeriana Nick wants to know how old people are and why you are interested in a 70's show?

RedKF: You're here putting up with us. That has to count for a lot.

angeriana: btw angeriana is 40 in Feb.

shennagh: I'm coming up 30 at Christmas.

RedKF: is 31 yr old mother of a 4 yr old boy in Arkansas...Watched TP on Nick in the 80's and has been infatuated with England ever since.

jansulli: I am 41 and I think the series gave us hope for the future - and continues to do so.

Alana84: I'll soon be 38

SnickerTP: is 29.

Nick_Young: I'll soon be 102 (Queen Mother)

angeriana: midigirl please tell us your age

TheLightFantastic: is a 17-year-old from Tennessee. I got interested in the TP after seeing the New Series on Nickelodeon, and then once I saw the Old Series it was amazing.

midigirl: my age oooo I feel like such a baby! I'm 19 with the mind of a 36 year old

shennagh: It's good to know that there are TP fans even younger than me.

redKF: TP just felt right... it was comfortable. The TP were for each other what I wanted for myself.

ILatimer84: I'm 17. I got interested by the new series because of the way it treated kids, and of course the cool psychic powers. Then I came online and found out (and got tapes of) the old series, which is also ubercool.

Nick_Young: We could solve the problem of me being underpaid if you all persuaded Nickelodeon to re-run the series....

SnikerTP: Do they still have the rights, Nick?

Latimer84: We're trying, we're trying. Arpi and I went on a short-lived campaign to do just that a while ago.

TheLightFantastic: No, no, if there was another series, let it be an adult series. :) Not on Nick, on ABC or something.

Nick_Young: Even better.

TheLightFantastic: Oh, heavens no! No, put it on sci-fi. :)

shennagh: And for those of us who don't have cable?

Latimer84: You wouldn't pay for cable just for the TP?!

TheLightFantastic: I don't have cable either :) I have satellite, which has proven cheaper than cable around here Pay for cable for the TP?

Shennagh: Anybody from Britain want to start a campaign for Channel 5 to rerun the show? They did it for The Sweeney Channel 5 might be getting the message as the TP's have been included in their top 10 shows recently.

angeriana: Nno it was channel 4 not channel 5.

RedKF: I think we'd pay for plane tickets to watch it live... daily.

Alana84: Here are the questions/comments I would still like to ask: 1. I'd like to know more about your relationship with the other cast members, and what it felt to be reunited with Philip Gilbert and PVC for the CD? 2. I am from Mexico, and the TP were a very big show here (dubbed into Spanish, although very nicely done). It was rerun many times up to the 1990's (even though the New Series have never been shown here). How do you feel about having been a star in so many countries?

Nick_Young: I never lost touch with TIM or PVC. It was great to work with them again. It felt like we'd only finished the day before...

Nick_Young: That was the key to the TP's success-the fact that it could be enjoyed in over 50 countries. I was aware that Mexico was the first country to buy the show. We used to joke about being Los Hombres de Maņana!

RedKF: (We are a sick, sick people.)

Latimer84: (No, we're "special" ;)

Alama84: You were actually called La Gente del ManaŅa (Hey, Red, if we've got to have an obsession, this is the one to have!)

Pikachutru: (Sick, special... it's all pretty much the same.)

RedKF: (True, Megan... I like special, Geoff)

Nick_Young: I knew my Spanish ees not so good. We were speaking Spanglish!

*** comickid has joined #tomorrowpeople

TheLightFantastic: Do you know any other languages besides English, Nick?

Alana84: Have you ever heard John in Spanish?

RedKF: (Does telepathy count as a language?)

midigirl: nope

Nick_Young: I do not speak any other languages other than English and Profane. I was going to say that as a TP you don't need a language.

* angeriana last call for questions... comickid your turn as u just arrived

Nick_Young: I would be amused to hear John speaking Spanish. I always thought that the acting was probably better when dubbed, which accounted for its success abroad.

midigirl: your acting is fab no matter what language you speak

RedKF: Not your acting, of course. ;)

shennagh: Although I'd love to hear you speak Italian. It's a beautiful language.

Nick_Young: flattery will get you everywhere.

alana84: I think you may be right! I'll send Jackie a sample of John speaking Spanish, so that you get a chance to hear it.

Nick_Young: Muchas gracias.

angeriana: send away and I'll put it up on my web site for all to hear.

shennagh: Bueno.

Latimer84: May I quote you on that line about flattery?

Nick_Young: Use it and claim it as your own.

Latimer84: Thanks!!!

RedKF: very cool.

TheLightFantastic: No, you've just given him a bigger .sig file!

Pikachutru: What's your best advice for anyone who'd like to become an actor? And I'd just like to add really fast that you were my very first crush EVER.

Nick_Young: Watch all the TP episodes, then think again

* Latimer84 cackles madly.

Alana84: You were my second crush, after PVC! :-)

SnickerTP: Well, Nick, you were never a crush of mine - but the show was a definite formative element in my teens.

Nick_Young: You can do all sorts of things with PVC if you can't afford rubber

* SnickerTP groans.

shennagh: ROTFL!

TheLightFantastic: ROTFL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SnickerTP: makes swords from PVC.

Latimer84: THAT is a notable quotable!.

How swordid

RedKF: I never really realized I had a crush on you/John till years later... but I certainly did.

SnickerTP: groans again. Two minutes in the punalty box, Nick.

RedKF: Steven/PVC was never my type.

Nick_Young: What's your problem Snicker? :)

TheLightFantastic: This is too funny :)

SnickerTP: has no problem... his doctor says so!

* angeriana ok folks last few questions as we all have beds to go to around here...

Latimer84: It's only 4:18 here!

SnickerTP: THANK YOU for holding a late late meeting for us yanks!

Alana84: Do you have children? If so, do they like the TP?

Nick_Young: That's what the special relationship is all about.

Jansulli: Have you heard whether there will be the chance of anymore CD's after these 4?

Nick_Young: Yes I do have children. My daughter is 11 and my son 9. She finds it too frightening to watch. He finds it too tame!

RedKF: LOL. No accounting for taste.

Shennagh: That's kids for you.

Latimer84: Wow! I wish MY dad were on the TP...

TheLightFantastic: I don't Geoff. My dad as TP would just be a little bit on this side of STRANGE.

Latimer84:: Will the CD stories ever bridge the gap between the old series and the new series?

Nick_Young: As long as you keep buyin' em, we'll keep makin em.

midigirl: yeah :D

Jansulli: You will be in a job for a long time then!!!!!

RedKF: We will hold you to that. (Get a stun gun handy folks.)

Nick_Young: I don't think there are any plans to revive the new series.

Alana84: Any chance of getting Elizabeth or some other cast members for the CDs?

* angeriana last call... we'll be closing chat in 9 minutes time...

midigirl: can I have a Bacardi and Coke please?.

Nick_Young: As long as PVC hasn't killed her off first....

RedKF: LOL

Latimer84: Ouch!

* angeriana can answer the Liz question as I spoke to her today and put the idea to her and she was interested.

* RedKF actually liked PVC as a baddie.

Jansulli: Many Thanks for your time Nick - it has been great!!!

Nick_Young: Baddies are always fun to play :).

shennagh: Everyone loves a bad guy.

RedKF: But not John... he's all good guy. And I love him that 'a way!

midigirl: mega bitches are even better;)

angeriana: Thanks to Nick for giving me the time and space in his office we are all very grateful that the TP has enriched our lives... Thanks so much Nick from all the fans'.

RedKF: Yes!

alana84: THANK YOU!!!!!!!!

shennagh: Yeah, you're a star, Nick.

Jansulli: I agree.

Drednort: THANK YOU!

redKF: Have a great night!

TheLightFantastic: Yes, thanks so much!!!!!!!

midigirl: yeah please come back and do it again.

Pikachutru: Thank you so very, very much. :) .

Latimer84: Thanks SO much! You've made my day (nay,my WEEK!)

midigirl: :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

s_lazerus: yes Thanks!

Drednort: Heh heh... just as my theory said!

Latimer84: Mystery solved!.

shennagh: Ironic - a plot by Thames TV?

Nick_Young: Yes, we used the BBC canteen for lunch.

RedKF: Drednort is the TP king. (And Jackie is the goddess of fandom.)

TheLightFantastic: Most truly she is! :)

Alana84: YES!

midigirl: yeah bye.
