Things have moved on by this time... We have lost Stephen and Tyso and gained Mike. I must confess that I much prefer the novelisation of this story especially where Tyso is the one to be captured by the Kleptons and suffers from claustrophobia whilst working in the mines. Still, Mike Holloway puts up an admirable performance and manages to rub John up the wrong way as well. There are also some very good scenes where the characters interact and reveal more of their personalities. I have always wondered whether it was in the script to push Nick Young into the pool in the closing scene or whether Elizabeth Adare just couldn't help herself. (lol) The serious issues about slavery and greed have been overshadowed in recent years by the discussion of the 'gay' nature of this story. It was not until I saw videotapes of this and other episodes that I noticed the frequent use of scantily clad young men in many scenes. I do feel that at the time this was made I never noticed this and neither did any of my friends so in my opinion it is modern day thinking which has placed the emphasis upon what are probably quite innocent stories. |
